Badminton is a game or sport similar to lawn tennis, but is played with a high net and a shuttlecock. The word "Badminton" was named after Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort's home in Gloucestershire, England. The first rules of the game were written in 1873 in India by the British. During the 1870s and 1880s Badminton was a very popular game in both India and England, although more as a recreational outdoor pastime, rather than a sport. Albert Hall, London, hosted the first professional Open Badminton Tournament in 1979. Badminton become a full medal sport at the Barcelona XXV Olympiad in 1992.
More than 1.1 billion viewers around the world watched Badminton's Olympic debut on television. Badminton is considered by many to be one of the worlds fastest and most dynamic racquet game or sport. As an outdoor sport, it is a game that can be played socially as a recreational pastime; competitively as a member of a local Club; or just for fun with friends and family.
